We at Mountain Yak love Scottish Winter, there is no other place like it in the world. We base ourselves in Fort William, and head out on the hill each day, this way we can be flexible and choose the best location each day.
This course will teach you how to stay safe and journey in the mountains during winter, from movement with crampons and ice axe to avalanche avoidance and planning. This unique environment is both challenging and beautiful, join us for a unforgettable weekend.
This course is for winter walking/mountaineering, if you would like a ice climbing trip this can only be arranged through our Private Guiding section.
Day 1: Meet in Fort William 9am, short briefing. Head out for the day either into Glen Coe or up onto Anoach Mor. We will use a gondola/chair lift to get high and maximize time in the snow.
Day 2: Today we will look at the weather and avalanche forecasts together before deciding on an area to journey in and hopefully bag a summit.
Depending on the weather, over the two days we will aim cover ice axe arrest, emergency rope use, crampon techniques, safe travel, winter navagation and avalanche avoidance along with other skills to maximise your winter adventures.
“Thanks to Jethro and Charlotte for a great weekend in Fort William last month, walking and brushing up on some winter skills and navigation. Excellent all-round hosts, and really good instruction. Bravo!”– Mr Gary Burkhardt
