Do you want to take people walking in the hills? Then this is the course for you. The Hill and Moorland Leader Award is ideal for: D of E Instructors, walking group organisers, or if you just want to share the wonderful wild places of the UK with others.

Who is this course run by?

This course is run in conjunction with approved Mountain Training provider Bryn Williams, MIC. Bryn is the current Mountain Training Wales executive officer and has years of experience in the outdoors. Bryn holds the Mountaineering Instructor Certificate, which is the highest award for taking people into the mountain in summer and winter conditions.

Whats involved?

Step 1:

First you need to register with Mountain Training  and create an account on the Mountain Training database (CMS). Then there are a few prerequisites :

  • You must be at least 18 years old
  • You should have at least a year’s worth of experience of hill walking
  • You should have an interest in leading groups in the hills
  • You must be a member of a mountaineering council: BMC, Mountaineering Scotland, or Mountaineering Ireland

Step 2:

Training, HML (Hill and Moorland Leader) training lasts for 3 days. You will learn new skills, make friends with other trainee HML Leaders, and most importantly have a great 3 days in the Hills.

Step 3:

The period between training and assessment varies in length for each person and is an opportunity to develop your skills, paying particular attention to any weaknesses identified during the training course.

Step 4:

Assessment, everyone is different and will be ready for this in their own time. The key to a good assessment is to view it as another learning opportunity and make sure you are well prepared:

  • Be familiar with the syllabus, practice and know the skills.
  • You must have logged a minimum of 40 Quality Hill walking Days in at least three different upland areas of the UK and Ireland (more is always better).
  • You must hold a current first aid certificate, minimum 16 hours and relevant to your work as a Hill and Moorland Leader (for advice on this Contact us)

Where and when?

We are running training on the 25th-27th May 2018 in the Clwydian range, this area of outstanding natural beauty  (AONB) is a fantastic environment to hone your skills with fantastic hills and moorland all just an hour or two from Birmingham, Liverpool, and Chester.
